Attorney General Bill Barr just directed the Justice Department to resume executions at the federal level for the first time since 2003, despite crime being down at the federal level.

This is an incredible step backward. We know that the death penalty is cruel and inhumane. It’s also applied unfairly and unjustly - disproportionately impacting people of color and poor people. It even sometimes results in the government executing innocent people - an irreversible and destructive mistake. And for all of those flaws, the death penalty provides no additional public safety benefit over other available sentences. The death penalty must be ended for good.
